The prevailing law and order situation came under detail discussion at a high level meeting held under the chairmanship of Chief Minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah here on Friday. The meeting was attended by Home Minister Dr Zulfikar Ali Mirza, Chief Secretary Fazlur Rehman, Provincial Police Officer, Home Secretary Mohammed Arif Khan and senior police officers.

Addressing the meeting Chief Minister called upon the police officers and law enforcing organisations to bring improvement in law and order situation in the province and particularly in Karachi and all resources be exploited to weed out anti-social elements, criminals and law breakers. He described the incidents, which occurred on Ashura in Karachi as highly regrettable and condemnable during which valuable lives were lost, many innocent persons injured and later public properties were looted and burnt and efforts made to damage the national economy.

The chief minister pointed out that to protect the life and property of people was the responsibility of government and law enforcing organisations. He said Sindh government would provide all possible facilities for an increase in the police's resources and meet their requirements while it would be the duty of all organisations to provide security to people.

Qaim Ali Shah particularly took notice of cases of kidnappings for ransom and said the culprits involved be brought to net. He issued directive for maintaining strict vigil on incidents of target killings, dacoities and jacking of buses and dacoities at highways so that people could live a peaceful life. As regards salaries of SHOs in Sindh, the Chief Minister directed that comparative details in that regard be obtained from Punjab, Balochistan, NWFP and Islamabad and only thereafter a decision would be taken.

In view of serious traffic jams on city's most busy roads due to rallies, political meetings and processions, a 3-member committee was formed to consider the strategy approved by Sindh cabinet in 2006 and to give alternate suggestions. To be headed by Home Secretary, the committee members will include CCPO and DCO Karachi and will submit its report in one week. The meeting decided to launch a campaign against vehicles with fictitious number plates, blind glasses and blue lights after three days.
